From Teachers to Gold and Silver Smiths.
Not too long after the death of his father in 1669, Cornelis Bodding / Boddingius moved to Goes, a city centrally located on the peninsula Zuid Beveland, in the province of Zeeland, in the southwestern part of Holland, where in 1672 he was a teacher at the Latin school.
The city and its surrounding villages would become the place of birth and residence of many generations of the Boddingius and Bodingius families and the spouses they married, until well into the 1900's.
As mentioned earlier, Cornelis Boddingius followed in the footsteps of his father and became a school teacher. However, his son Adriaan Boddingius became a silversmith and was the first of five generations of gold and silver smiths living and practicing in Goes. As a result, the Boddingius family became one of the prominent and wealthy families of this city during the 18th and early 19th century. |
Zeeland is a province which mainly consists of islands, peninsulas and water. The map above shows Zeeland around the 18th century and the location of Goes. |

His death was registered the same day by Nicolaas Katsman (46) and Johannes Magielse (54), both undertakers living in Goes and acquaintances of the family. In January 1797 he paid 12 shilling (£0-12-0) for a seat in the church in Goes in the section named Luijtenantsbogt. He married (1) on 20 August 1781 in Goes at age 26, with marriage banns first published on 5 August 1781: Judit AMIJS, child of Johan Amijs and Maria de la Sabel, christened 30 August 1759 in Goes. Her christening was witnessed by Judit van Wijngen. The ceremony for publishing of the banns (ondertrouw) was performed in a closed consistory and the marriage ceremony was performed in a closed church. She died 28 October 1819 in Goes at 2 PM, in the house in ward D with number 8, at age 61. Her death was registered the next day by Pieter den Boer (69) and Cornelis Zitters (59), both city clerks (stadsbode) and acquaintances of the family. At the time of her death, both she and her husband, Daniel Boddingius, were rentiers (renteniers). They had the following children:
Daniel Boddingius too, followed in the footsteps of both his father Marcus Boddingius and his grandfather Adriaan Boddingius and in 1778, when he was accepted as a gold and silversmith at age 23, also became the third generation of Boddingius' with the profession of gold or silversmith. He is know to have been a member of the guild in 1779, 1786-1787, 1791-1793 and 1797. Marcus Does, son of his sister Cornelia Boddingius and Adriaan Does, who himself was a gold and silversmith but died in 1788, was one of the students known to have studied under him as a gold and silversmith on 1 March 1790.
Together Daniel Boddingius and Judith Amijs were witnesses at the christening of Danalina Boddingius on 22 December 1805 in Goes, child of their nephew Marcus Boddingius and Pieternella Harinck.
Daniel BODDINGIUS married (2) on 2 May 1822 in Goes at age 67, with marriage banns published on 3 April 1822 and 4 April 1822: Catharina DUIJVEWAART, daughter of Claas Antonis DUIJVEWAART and Maria de MOL, christened 16 November 1777 in Goes, died 7 April 1857 in Goes at age 79, age 44 at time of marriage. No witnesses were recorded for her christening. At the time of his marriage with Catharina Duijvewaart, Daniel Boddingius was retired and living of his wealth (rentenier).

Johan (Jan) BODDINGIUS, child of Marcus BODDINGIUS and Maria Daniels de JONGE, christened 10 September 1760 in Goes. His christening was witnessed by his uncle Johan van den Briel, after whom he was named and his aunt Catharina Boddingius, Johan van den Briel's wife. He died 10 July 1832 at 4:30 AM, in the house with number 116 in Wemeldinge (Z), at age 71. His death was registered the same day in Wemeldinge (Z). In 1776 his parents paid 6 shilling (£0-6-0) for a seat (no. 4) for him in the Kleine Kerk in Goes.
He married 28 April 1784 in Goes, with marriage banns first published on 2 April 1784: Pieternella OVERSLUIS, child of Cornelis OVERSLUIS and Aaltje STEENBAKKER, was born 16 September 1762 in Goes and christened 19 September 1762 in Goes. She died 15 June 1834 at 12 noon, in the house with number H202, in Middelburg (Z), at age 71. Her death was registered the next day in Middelburg (Z).
At the time of their marriage, he was 23 years old and his occupation was listed as (land) owner (eigenaar), while she was 21 years old. The publishing of the banns ceremony was performed after completion of the worship service and the marriage ceremony was performed in a closed church.
In 1779 they paid 12 shilling (£0-12-0) for a seat in the Grote Kerk in Goes for him and 17 shilling (£0-17-0) for a seat for her. In 1796 he paid the church 6 shilling and 8 pence (£0-6-8) for a certificate of ownership of a grave. In 1796 he was paid 3 shilling and 4 pence (£0-3-4) by the church for unspecified reasons.
Jan Boddingius, just as his older brothers Adriaan and Daniel, followed in the footsteps of his father Marcus Boddingius and his grandfather Adriaan Boddingius and in 1784, when he was accepted as a gold and silversmith at the age of 23 or 24, became the third person of the third generation of Boddingius' working as gold or silversmith. He is know to have been a member of the guild in 1786-1787, 1791-1793, 1795 and 1797. One of the students known to have studied under him was Cornelis Engelse on 26 October 1796. As Master gold and silver cashier (kashouder), he took the oath for quality inspector (keurmeester) of gold and silver for Goes on 26 June 1807. His Master symbol was a tree (1807). He was an active member of the "St. Joris Schutterij", a bow and arrow guild/society, for which he performed an appraisal of their (silver) assets in 1786. He also was closely involved in the liquidation of the guild and its assets in 1798, after the invasion and occupation of the city by French troops of Napoleon.
Jan Boddingius and Pieternella Oversluis had the following children:

He was born 1 February 1776 and christened 14 February 1776, both in Goes. His christening was witnessed by Foort Rijder and Cornelia van Weerde. He was named after his paternal grandfather Marcus Boddingius. He died 4 July 1859 in Goes at age 83. He married 3 November 1796 in Goes at age 20, with marriage banns first published in Goes on 14 October 1796: Pieternella HARINCK, child of Hubertus HARINCK and Elisabeth WAWELAAR. She was born 20 October 1774 and christened 23 October 1774, both in Goes and died 3 August 1845 in Goes at age 70, age 22 at time of marriage. Their publishing of the banns ceremony (ondertrouw) was performed in a closed consistory and the marriage ceremony was performed in a closed church. In 1798 she paid 17 shilling (£0-17-0) for a seat the "Grote Kerk" in Goes. In 1815, they were living in the house in ward C with number 57, in Goes. They had the following children:
Marcus Boddingius followed in the footsteps of his ancestors and became the fourth generation of Boddingius' working as a gold or silversmith. Apparently he already started as an apprentice at a young age, because according to the records, on 1 May 1789, when he was only 13 years old, he was a student under his father Adriaan Boddingius and on 25 October 1796, at age 20, he was accepted by the guild as a gold and silversmith. He also was an ensign (Vaandrig) in the Army and in the year 1796 he was billed 8 shilling and 8 pence (£0-8-8) for a seat in the church in Goes, in the section reserved for officers of the War Council, named the Krijgsraad Banken. Although there is no record for the actual payment of this amount, the following year (1797), he actually did pay 8 shilling and 10 pence (£0-8-10) for this seat.
He was a member of the guild for gold and silversmiths in 1795 and 1797 and was a teacher himself. One of the students who studied under him to become a silversmith was Samuel Puts, who is listed as a student on 12 October 1797. As a Master gold and silver cashier (kashouder), on 26 June 1807, he took the oath for quality inspector (keurmeester) of gold and silver for the city of Goes. His Master symbols were "MB" in a rectangle, just "MB" and "MB" with four dots.
In October 1797, Marcus Boddingius and his wife Pieternella Harinck, with whom he married a year earlier, were living in the house with number C55 on the west side of the Korte Vos and the Papegaaistraat in Goes. Their six children were all born there and in 1807 they were still living there. In 1826 they were living in the houses with numbers C56 and C57, where they continued to live until about 1836.
On 1 February 1833, they purchased the house with number C241, located in the Lange Vosstraat, from Jacobus Adrianus du Moulin, a surgeon (chirurgijn) in Goes at that time. They however continued to live where they were and sometime around 1836, their son Adriaan Boddingius moved into the house C241. The house is described as "een woonhuis, zomerhuis en erve met een inhouds grootte van twee roeden en 26 ellen".
In 1836, they moved to the house with number C72, located on the north side of the Papegaaistraat and ending at the west side of the Korte Vosstraat, further described as "een woonhuis met erf met een inhouds grootte van ene roede en 27 ellen en een pakhuisje met een inhouds grootte van ongeveer 40 ellen". In 1839 Marcus Boddingius and his wife Pieternella Harinck, swapped homes with their son Adriaan and moved into the house C241, which they had purchased in 1833 and their son Adriaan had been living in with his family since 1836. Adriaan moved to the house C72, vacated by his parents. This move was probably related to the retirement of Marcus Boddingius' as a gold and silversmith, because his business was liquidated, and his Master seals destroyed, a few months later on 20 March 1840. It appears that the house C72 may have included a storefront (winkelraam) and may have been the place where the family had their silver and goldsmith business. It's likely Marcus Boddingius sold this house to his son at that time, because in a document of 1862, Adriaan Boddingius is referenced as having obtained ownership of the house C72 through a purchase on 9 October 1839.
Pieternella Harinck continued to live in the house with number C241 until her death in 1845, while Marcus Boddingius continued to live there until 1 May 1850. By then, a 74 years old widowed man, he moved to the house with number A191 in the Wijngaardstraat, where he rented some rooms and continued to live until his death on 4 July 1859.
When Marcus Boddingius moved out of the house C241, his daughter Elisabeth Maria Boddingius and her husband Pieter van Daalen and their two children still living at home, Pieternella Adriana and Adriaan Marcus, moved into the house C241. After the death of Marcus Boddingius, at the division of his estate in August 1859, his daughter Elisabeth Maria Boddingius and her husband Pieter van Daalen, obtained ownership of the house C241, in which they already had been living since 1850.
On 17 September 1852, Marcus Boddingius joined the Ds. Budding's"old reformed congregation" of Goes, a congregation in which his son Adriaan Boddingius was a deacon and his son in law Gijsbrecht Sterk an elder. On 2 October 1852 he officially left the DRC/NHK to which he had belonged all his prior life. He continued to be a member of the "old reformed congregation" until his death in 1859.
According to an inventory made on 1 August 1859 by notary Smallegange, and the subsequent division of the estate later that month, the total assets of Marcus Boddingius at the time of his death were valued at Fl. 20,497 and included:
His estate was divided as follows:
On 19 November 1809, Marcus Boddingius and Pieternella Harinck were witnesses at the christening in Goes of Pieternella Marculina Harinck, daughter of Pieternella's brother, Cornelis Harinck and Catharina Rapholm. On 22 July 1815, Marcus Boddingius was one of the registrants of the death of Jan Harinck, child of his wife's brother Cornelis Harinck and Catharina Rapholm. |

Pieternella BODDINGIUS, was born 21 January 1778 and christened 25 January 1778, both in Goes. No witnesses were recorded for her christening. She was named after her maternal grandmother Pieternella Cornelisse Schouwenaar. She died 3 December 1852 in Goes at age 74. About four months pregnant of her first child, she married on 7 December 1803 in Goes at age 25, with marriage banns first published in Goes on 19 November 1803: Simon HOOGESTEGER, son of Pieter HOOGESTEGER and Machelina EGLONS, was christened 30 March 1782 in Goes. At the time of his marriage he was 21 years old. He died 16 January 1822 at 3 AM in Goes in the house with number B143, at age 39. His death was registered the same day by Antonij de Jonge (61), a storekeeper and neighbour and an acquaintance, Joseph Jongen (42), a bailiff, both living in Goes. At the time of his death he was a carpenter.
After the death of her husband, Pieternella Boddingius continued to live in Goes for the rest of her life. In 1826 and 1827 she lived in the house with number B44. She later moved to the house with number D54 and in 1830 to the house with number B207. Sometime before 1837 she moved to the house with number A205, on the south side of the Beestenmarkt and sometime in the mid 1840's to the house with number A31. From 1850 until her death in 1852, she lived in the house with number B66 on the Oude Vismarkt. Although the record of 1827 briefly lists her as being a housekeeper, the records of all other years list her as not working for a living (particuliere) and in the last years of her life, 1850 to 1852, as someone receiving assistance from the church (gealimenteerde).
Simon Hoogesteger and Pieternella Boddingius had the following children:

Elisabeth Maria BODDINGIUS, child of Marcus BODDINGIUS and Pieternella HARINCK. She was born 2 April 1800 and christened 13 April 1800, both in Goes. Her christening was witnessed by her maternal grandfather Hubertus Harinck and her aunt Maria Johanna Harinck. She was named after her maternal grandmother Elisabeth Wawelaar and her aunt Maria Johanna Harinck. She died 6 August 1873 in Utrecht (U) at age 73. She married 15 November 1821 in Goes, with marriage banns published on 1 November 1820 and 2 November 1820 in Goes: Pieter van DAALEN, child of Adriaan van DALEN and Adriana van DRUINEN. He was born 8 May 1799 in Goes and died 15 July 1877 in Goes at age 78. At the time of their marriage, he was 22 years old and a Clerk (Griffier) of the Court in Goes, while she was 21 years old and without an occupation. They were both living in Goes.
They had the following children:
At least from 1826 until sometime around 1836, they were living in Goes in the house with number B225. After that they moved to the house with number A73, on the south side of the Sint Adriaanstraat in Goes. On 15 May 1850 they moved to the house C241, in the Lange Vosstraat, owned by and until that moment occupied by, Elisabeth's father, Marcus Boddingius.
Pieter van Daalen continued to work as a Clerk (Griffier) of the Court (Arrondissements Rechtbank) in Goes at least until 1859. On 30 January 1829, he was one of the registrants of the death of Hubertus Harinck, his wife's uncle, in Goes.

Adriaan BODDINGIUS, child of Marcus BODDINGIUS and Pieternella HARINCK. He was born 6 December 1801 and christened 20 December 1801, both in Goes. His christening was witnessed by his paternal grandparents Adriaan Boddingius and Cornelia Rijder. He was named after his paternal grandfather Adriaan Boddingius. He died 6 April 1861 in Goes, at age 59. He married 9 June 1831 in Goes at age 29, with marriage banns published in Goes on 29 May 1831 and 5 June 1831:
She was born 6 May 1808 in Goes and christened 8 June 1808 in Goes. No witnesses were recorded for her christening. She died 30 May 1882 in Dordrecht (ZH), at age 74. It's not known who she was raised by, but her mother died 7 May 1808, a day after giving birth to her and her father ran off with another woman and moved to Groningen (Gr) sometime in 1809. If it were her grandparents, it must have been her maternal grandparents, because her paternal grandfather, Cornelis Snoep, died in 1795, years before her birth and her paternal grandmother Francina Joel, died in February 1809, less than a year after her birth. Her marriage banns in 1831 made reference to the fact that, not only were both her parents deceased at that time, but so were her grandparents.
At the time of their marriage, Adriaan Boddingius was 29 years old and a silversmith, while she was 23 years old and not working for a living (particuliere). Both were living in Goes. They had the following children:

Adriaan Boddingius, became the fifth generation of Boddingius' working as a gold or silversmith. His Master symbol "AB59" was first registered on 2 November 1833. His Master seals were destroyed on 29 June 1861, a few months after his death earlier that year. Until sometime between 1828 and 1830 he was living with his parents in the houses C56 and C57 in Goes. When he moved out of the parental home, he moved to the house with number C147, where, after getting married, he was joined by his wife Johanna Cornelia Snoep. They continued to live there until about 1836, at which time they moved to the house with number C241, on the east side of the Lange Vosstraat in Goes, which had been purchased by his parents in 1833. They only lived there for a few years and at the end of 1839, when his father Marcus Boddingius retired as a gold and silver smith, they swapped homes with his parents and moved into the house with number C72, on the north side of the Papagaaistraat. This property probably also housed the gold and silver smith store / business and he probably purchased the house from his parents at that time, because in a later document Adriaan is referenced as having purchased the house C72 on 9 October 1839.
On 7 December 1858, Adriaan Boddingius acknowledged he owed the estate of his, at that time recently deceased, brother in law Gijsbregt Sterk, an amount of Fl. 2,400, which was secured by a first mortgage on his house C72 in the Papegaaistraat After Adriaan's death, times apparently got tough, because the payments for the mortgage fell behind and on 11 October 1862, the house, which included a small storage structure (pakhuisje) at the back, was sold by public auction on demand of the estate of the late Gijsbregt Sterk, which basically were Gijsbregt's children and thus Johanna Cornelia Snoep's nieces and nephews, albeit from her late husband's side.
The buyer was Fredrik Sterk, son of the late Gijsbregt Sterk, who bought it for Fl. 2,000 on behalf of himself and his seven brothers and sisters, basically the same people to whom the money was owed.

On 14 October 1862, about 18 months after her husbands death, Johanna Cornelia Snoep requested an attest from the "separated christian congregation" in Goes she belonged to, for herself and her daughter Adriana, because they were moving to Rotterdam (ZH). They only lived there for nine months and in July 1863 they returned to live in Goes.
On 9 May 1872 she again moved with her daughter Adriana Boddingius from Goes, this time to the house B68 in the Wijnstraat, in Dordrecht (ZH). On 13 April 1874, about 18 months after the marriage of her daughter Adriana Boddingius in Dordrecht (ZH), she moved to Wemeldinge (Z), to live with her son Thomas Boddingius and his family. On 14 July 1877 she moved back to Dordrecht (ZH), this time to the house C1681.
She died 30 May 1882 at 10 AM, at the address D790 in the Begijnhof, in Dordrecht (ZH), presumably the nursing home she was cared for during her illness as referenced in the above ad of thanks placed by her son Hubertus Boddingius. She was 74 years old. Her death was registered the next day in Dordrecht (ZH). |

He was born 10 May 1804 and christened 3 June 1804, both in Goes. His christening was witnessed by his maternal grandfather Hubertus Harinck after whom he was named. He died 4 August 1858 in Goes at age 54. Apparently he lived in Dordrecht (ZH) for some time where he probably met his future wife. However in 1827 or 1828 he moved back to Goes where he lived with his parents in the houses C56 and C57. He married (1) on 25 April 1829 in Goes, with marriage banns published in Goes on 29 March 1829 and 5 April 1829: Hendrika de VOOGD, child of Jacob de VOOGD (living in Dordrecht (ZH) at that time) and Pieternella TRUMPI (deceased). All three of their children were born here and Hendrika de Voogd died here on 15 February 1835 at 1 PM at age 27, just two weeks after giving birth to their third child. Her death was registered the next day by Johannes Magielse (56), an undertaker and Marinus Adriaan Helfaan (39), a smith, both neighbors and living in Goes.
Hubertus Boddingius continued to live in the house with number C61, together with his two youngest children, Jacoba Pieternella and Hendrika Cornelia Adriana. His oldest daughter, Pieternella, was placed with her grandparents Marcus Boddingius and Pieternella Harinck, who where living just a few houses down in the houses with numbers C56 and C57.
Hubertus BODDINGIUS, about one year after the death of his wife Hendrika de Voogd, married (2) on 22 April 1836 in Goes at age 31: Maria Johanna COURLOIS, child of Alexander COURLOIS (52 years old and bailiff at the Court of and living in Goes at the time of marriage of his daughter) and Anthonia LE COINTRE (deceased at the time of marriage of her daughter). She previously lived in Middelburg (Z). They had the following children:
Hubertus Boddingius and Maria Johanna Courlois initially lived in the house with number C61, where Hubertus Boddingius was living at the time of his marriage and had been living with his previous wife, Hendrika de Voogd. However in 1837 they moved to the house with number C76, on the south side of the Papegaaistraat. They continued to live there at least until 1852 and all six of their children were born there.
Hubertus BODDINGIUS, after the death of his second wife Maria Johanna Courlois, married (3) on 16 September 1857 in Goes at age 53, with intent to marry registered in Goes on 26 August 1857and marriage banns published in Goes on 30 August 1857 and 6 September 1857: Johanna Ida de BIJ, child of Johannis de BIJ and Catharina van DRONGELEN (both deceased at the time of marriage of their daughter) was born in 1819 in Rotterdam (ZH). At the time of her marriage she was 38 years old, without occupation and living in Goes, previously in 's-Gravenhage (ZH). They had no children.
Johanna Ida de BIJ, after the death of her husband Hubertus Boddingius, married (2) on 5 July 1861 in Monnickendam (NH) at age 42: Andries Lodewijk SCHMIDT, child of Lodewijk Paulus SCHMIDT and Lotta POTTINGA, was born in 1810 in Monnickendam (NH), age 51 at time of his marriage and a widow of Neeltje Prins.
Hubertus Boddingius, was the second person of the fifth generation of Boddingius' working as gold or silversmith. His Master symbol "HB" was first registered on 11 September 1829. However, the gold and silver business may not have been as profitable for him as it was for his ancestors and in 1857, at the time of marriage of his daughter Pieternella Boddingius, he was listed as a merchant in glass-wares. |

She married 14 October 1858 in Goes at age 24, with intent to marry registered on 1 October 1858 in Goes and marriage banns published on 3 October 1858 and 10 October 1858 in Goes: Johannis Marinus van der MADE, child of Cornelis van der MADE (deceased at the time of marriage of his son) and Jacomina BRANDT (without occupation, living in Klundert (NB) at the time of marriage of her son). He was born 16 July 1834 in Klundert (NB). At the time of his marriage, he was 24 years old and a carpenter living in Goes. He died sometime between 1871 and 1887, presumably sometime in the early 1880's, at the most 53 years old. They had the following children:
On 5 May 1870, Johannis Marinus van der Made, together with his wife Johanna Cornelia Boddingius and their children Cornelis van der Made and Johanna Cornelia van der Made, moved from Alblasserdam (ZH), to the house B68 in Dordrecht (ZH). It is not known, when they moved from Goes and if they immediately settled in Alblasserdam (ZH). He was a construction supervisor (opzichter) at that time. On 15 April 1871, the family moved to Leiden (ZH).
It is not known exactly when Johanna Cornelia Boddingius moved back to Dordrecht (ZH), however in 1883 she lived at the address Ward E, number 566 on the Spuiweg in Dordrecht (ZH), together with her brother Hubertus Boddingius. It not clear if she already was a widow at that time, because the exact date of death of her husband Johannis Marinus van der Made is not known yet, however in 1887 she was referred to as a widow.
In 1885, Johanna Cornelia Boddingius and her brother Hubertus Boddingius were both living at the Spuiweg 38, presumably the same address as previously referred to as Ward E, number 566. Johanna Cornelia's son, Cornelis van der Made, was also living with them at that time.
They continued to live at the Spuiweg 38, until 1 January 1890, when they moved to the Voorstraat 73a. Records do not show that Johanna Cornelia's son, Cornelis van der Made, was still living with them at that time, however Johanna Cornelia's daughter, Johanna Cornelia van der Made, apparently had moved in with them.
The three of them continued to live at the Voorstraat 73a until 1893, when they moved to the Nieuwstraat 45, where they once again were joined by Johanna Cornelia's son, Cornelis van der Made.
Although Johanna Cornelia Boddingius had not been working (particuliere) before, sometime between 1893 and 1897, she apparently started her own drapery/textile accessory store (winkel in manufacturen), which she operated together with her daughter Johanna Cornelia van der Made.
They all continued to live at the Nieuwstraat 45 at least until the death of Johanna Cornelia van der Made on 21 April 1902. After Johanna Cornelia van der Made's death, Johanna Cornelia Boddingius and her brother Hubertus Boddingius, moved to the St. Jorisweg 16 boven (upper floor). They apparently did not live there for too long, because in 1904 they were both living at the Vrieseweg 27 boven (upper floor), where they continued to live until the death of Hubertus Boddingius on 9 March 1907.
Johanna Cornelia Boddingius continued to live there until 28 February 1910, when she moved to Amsterdam (NH). On 29 October 1910, she moved from Amsterdam (NH) to the Korte Hillestraat 20b in Rotterdam (ZH), presumably to live close by to her sister Kornelia Adriana Boddingius, with whom she later moved in at the Pretorialaan 60b in Rotterdam (ZH).
On 27 June 1912, about a year after the death of her sister Kornelia Adriana Boddingius, who died on 30 August 1911, she moved to the Javastraat 19 in Amsterdam (NH). At that time she was 78 years old and probably died in Amsterdam (NH). |

Pieter BODDINGIUS, child of Adriaan BODDINGIUS and Johanna Cornelia SNOEP, was born 4 September 1836 in Goes. He was named after his paternal grandmother, Pieternella Harinck. He died 1 April 1867 in Krabbendijke (Z) at age 30. His death was registered the following day in Krabbendijke (Z). He married 11 June 1863 in Goes, with intent to marry registered in Goes on 27 May 1863 and marriage banns published on 31 May 1863 and 1 June 1863, his second cousin: Katharina de JONGE, daughter of Geraard de JONGE (window maker, living in Goes at the time of marriage of his daughter) and Pieternella Marculina HARINCK (deceased at the time of marriage of her daughter). She was born 25 August 1837 in Goes and died 9 March 1875 in Krabbendijke (Z) at age 37. At the time of their marriage he was 26 years old and a watchmaker living in Kattendijke (Z), while she was 25 years old and without an occupation living in Goes. Their marriage was witnessed by her brother Adriaan de Jonge, 30 years, a house painter, her uncle Johannes de Graag, 56 years, a cake and cookie baker and his cousins Pierre Johannisse, 57 years, a pharmacist and Frederik Sterk, 38 years, a storekeeper, all living in Goes. They had the following children.
Katharina de JONGE, after the death of her husband Pieter Boddingius, married (2) on 5 April 1868 in Krabbendijke (Z) at age 28, her uncle: Pieter Adriaan de GRAAG, born 27 September 1808, age 59 at time of marriage. Pieter Adriaan de Graag's first wife Johanna de Jonge, sister of Katharina's father, died 30 January 1892, so she was still alive at the time of this marriage and therefore Pieter Adriaan de Graag must have been divorced. For more information about the de Jonge family visit the de Jonge family website. |

He was born 24 May 1838 in Goes. He was named after his maternal grandfather Thomas Snoep. He died 25 March 1911 in Wemeldinge (Z) at 2:30 AM, at age 72. His death was registered the same day by his son Adriaan Boddingius. He married 3 September 1863 in Goes, with intent to marry registered on 11 Augustus 1863 in Goes and marriage banns published in Goes on 16 Augustus 1863 and 23 Augustus 1863: |

Maria Johanna OLIVIERSE, child of Jan OLIVIERSE (born 9 February 1815 in Goes, died 16 September 1891 in Goes, married 29 September 1836 in Goes, an office clerk) and Anthonetta Adriana Carolina HARINCK (born 8 July 1815 in Goes, died 29 September 1836 in Goes). She was born 15 January 1839 in Goes. She was named after her maternal grandmother Maria Johanna Verberkmoes. She died 12 October 1920 in Wemeldinge (Z) at 6 AM, at age 81. Her death was registered the same day by her sons Adriaan Boddingius and Johannes Cornelis Boddingius.
At the time of their marriage he was 25 years old and a bread baker in Vlaardingen (ZH), while she was 24 years old, without an occupation living in Goes. Their marriage was witnessed by his cousins Pierre Johannissen, 57 years, pharmacist and Frederik Sterk, 38 years, storekeeper and her uncles Leendert Vermeulen, 49 years, landowner and Marinus Olivierse, 43 years, cow milker, all living in Goes.
They had the following children:
|
Maria Johanna Olivierse |
After their marriage, Thomas Boddingius and Maria Johanna Olivierse lived in Middelburg (Z), where their first two children were born. Sometime in 1868 they moved to Goes, where their third child was born. On 19 November 1869, Thomas Boddingius was a witness at the marriage of his sister in law Elisabeth Suzanna Antoinette Olivierse with Jan Lammers in Goes. At that time he was living in Goes and working on the Kings Highway (Rijkswegwerker), presumably as a construction worker.
Before 1871 they moved to Wemeldinge (Z), where they lived at least until 1877 and their fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh children were born. In 1880 they lived in Schore (Z) where he was a bridge-keeper. They lived there and he continued to work there as a bridge-keeper, until at least the end of 1891, but possibly until the early 1900's. Schore (Z) became a place for many important events in the life of the Boddingius family. Their eigth child, Wouter Jan Baptist Boddingius was born there in 1880 and died there in 1883.
Two of their other children died there as well, namely their seventh child Antonetta Adriana Carolina Boddingius in 1880 and their second child, Jan Anton Boddingius in 1889, just five days after the marriage of their oldest son, Adriaan Boddingius with Pieternella Sterk, which also took place in Schore (Z). Two years later, in 1891, their third child, Johannes Cornelis Boddingius, married Pieternella's younger sister Wilhelmina Sterk.
As described in the next section, the Sterk family were no strangers to the Boddingius family. Thomas Boddingius' aunt, Cornelia Adriana Boddingius, was married to Gijsbregt Sterk, an uncle of Pieter Sterk, father of Pieternella and Wilhelmina Sterk. Living in a small village like Schore (Z), they must have known each other quite well.
All four sons of Thomas Boddingius and Maria Johanna Olivierse moved to Rotterdam (ZH) after their marriages in the 1890's. Only their oldest son, Adriaan Boddingius returned to live in Zeeland in 1893, after a short stay in Rotterdam (ZH) and settled in Wemeldinge (Z). At some point in time after 1891, probably in the early 1900's, Thomas Boddingius and his wife Maria Johanna Olivierse also moved to Wemeldinge (Z), presumably to be close to their only son living in Zeeland. They both died in Wemeldinge (Z), in 1911 and in 1920 respectively.
Thomas Boddingius is the only known male of the Boddingius family, with descendents living in the 20th century and beyond. All known name carriers are descendents of one of the four surviving sons. It however should be noted that the surnames of Adriaan en Johannes Cornelis, were properly recorded as Boddingius, while the names of Anton Adriaan Karel Hubertus and Pieter, who were both born in Wemeldinge (Z), were mistakenly recorded as Bodingius.
From this generation onward, four distinct family branches developed, two with the name Boddingius and two with the name Bodingius. This has been reflected in this document by separating the descendents into four branches, starting with generation X. |

Kornelia Adriana BODDINGIUS, child of Adriaan BODDINGIUS and Johanna Cornelia SNOEP. She was born 16 August 1840 in Goes. She was named after her aunt Cornelia Adriana Boddingius. On 17 May 1877 she moved from Goes (Z) to Dordrecht (ZH), to live with her sister Adriana Boddingius and her husband Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bartelt, who at that time were living in the house E404 at the Bleekerssloot in Dordrecht (Z). Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bartelt was a sailor who was sailing the oceans (zeeman grote vaart) and was rarely home.
Kornelia Adriana BODDINGIUS married 7 June 1877 in Dordrecht (ZH), with marriage banns published in Dordrecht (ZH) and Amsterdam (NH) on 27 May 1877 and 3 June 1877: Johannes Baptist WOUTERS, child of Franciscus WOUTERS and Johanna Maria Elisabeth Janse. He was born 23 August 1828 in Amsterdam (NH). At the time of their marriage, he was 48 years old, Roman Catholic, a sailor (zeeman) and living in Amsterdam (NH), while she was 36 years old, Dutch Reformed, without an occupation and living in Dordrecht (ZH).
After their marriage, moved in with his wife and his wife's sister and brother in law, who were all living in the house E404 at the Bleekerssloot in Dordrecht (Z). Just as his new brother in law, he too was a sailor sailing the oceans. Only six months after their marriage, Johannes Baptist Wouters died on 26 December 1877 at 7 AM, on the Dutch frigate Jupiter, sailing in the Indian Ocean at 12 degrees 40 minutes South and 98 degrees 17 minutes East, as a result of drowning after falling overboard. He was 48 years old. His death was only registered in the civil records of Dordrecht (ZH) on 30 April 1878, after the receipt of a letter from the Minister responsible for the Navy, by the records office in Dordrecht (ZH), outlining his death.
On 27 May 1880, Kornelia Adriana Boddingius moved from Dordrecht (ZH) to Leiden (ZH), possibly to live with her other sister Johanna Cornelia Boddingius, who had moved to Leiden (ZH) from Dordrecht (ZH) on 15 April 1871. She later moved to Gouda (ZH) and on 17 July 1890 she moved from Gouda (ZH) to Rotterdam (ZH), where she lived at Zwaanshals 173, Zwaanshals 75, another address, Hovenierstraat 39, another address and then Hillelaan 30. On 25 January 1902, she moved back to Dordrecht (ZH).
On 12 April 1910 she returned to Rotterdam (ZH) and moved in with her sister Adriana Boddingius and her husband Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bartelt who lived at the Hillelaan 18b. She had previously lived with them in Dordrecht (ZH). After the death of her sister's husband, Kornelia Adriana Boddingius and her sister Adriana Boddingius moved to the Pretorialaan 60b, where Kornelia Adriana Boddingius died on 30 August 1911 at 9 AM, at age 71. Her death was registered the same day in Rotterdam (ZH). At the time of her death she was without an occupation.
Kornelia Adriana Boddingius and Johannes Baptist Wouters did not have any children.

Hubertus BODDINGIUS, child of Adriaan BODDINGIUS and Johanna Cornelia SNOEP. He was born 27 September 1844 in Goes and was named after his uncle Hubertus Boddingius. He died 9 March 1907 at 3:30 PM, at the Vrieseweg 27 boven (upper floor) in Dordrecht (ZH), at age 62. He was never married and did not have any children.
When exactly Hubertus Boddingius moved to Dordrecht (ZH) is not known, however in 1883 he lived at the address E566 on the Spuiweg in Dordrecht (ZH) and although he lived on a number of different addresses, he continued to live in Dordrecht (ZH) until his death in 1907.
His sister Johanna Cornelia Boddingius, who was married to Johannes Marinus van der Made, was living with him in 1883 at the address E566. It is not clear if she already was a widow at that time.
In 1885, Hubertus Boddingius and his sister Johanna Cornelia Boddingius, were both living at the Spuiweg 38, presumably the same address as previously referred to as E566. Johanna Cornelia's son, Cornelis van der Made, was also living with them at that time.
Hubertus Boddingius and his sister Johanna Cornelia Boddingius, who in 1887 for the first time was referred to as a widow of Johannes Marinus van der Made, continued to live at the Spuiweg 38, until 1 January 1890, when they moved to the Voorstraat 73a. Records do not show that Johanna Cornelia's son, Cornelis van der Made, was still living with them at that time, however, Johanna Cornelia's daughter, Johanna Cornelia van der Made apparently had moved in with them.
Hubertus Boddingius, his sister Johanna Cornelia Boddingius and her daughter Johanna Cornelia van der Made, continued to live at the Voorstraat 73a until 1893, when they moved to the Nieuwstraat 45 and where they once again were joined by Johanna Cornelia's son, Cornelis van der Made.
Sometime between 1893 and 1897, Johanna Cornelia Boddingius and her daughter Johanna Cornelia van der Made, started their own drapery/textile accessory store (winkel in manufacturen).
Hubertus Boddingius, his sister Johanna Cornelia Boddingius and her daughter Johanna Cornelia van der Made, continued to live at the Nieuwstraat 45 at least until the death of Johanna Cornelia van der Made on 21 April 1902.
After Johanna Cornelia van der Made's death, Hubertus Boddingius and his sister Johanna Cornelia Boddingius, moved to the St. Jorisweg 16 boven (upper floor). They apparently did not live there for too long, because in 1904 they were both living at the Vrieseweg 27 boven (upper floor). On 12 October 1905, Hubertus Boddingius was a witness at the marriage of his niece Cornelia Adriana Bartelt, daughter of his sister Adriana Boddingius, with Gerardus Johannes de Jong, in Rotterdam (ZH).
Hubertus Boddingius and his sister Johanna Cornelia Boddingius both continued to live at the Vrieseweg 27 boven (upper floor) until the death of Hubertus Boddingius on 9 March 1907 at 3:30 PM, at age 62. His death was registered 11 March 1907 in Dordrecht (ZH).
Johanna Cornelia Boddingius continued to live at the Vrieseweg 27 boven (upper floor) until 28 February 1910, when she moved to Amsterdam (NH).
From at least 1883, until his death in 1907, Hubertus Boddingius was an office clerk (kantoor bediende). |

Adriana BODDINGIUS, child of Adriaan BODDINGIUS and Johanna Cornelia SNOEP. She was born 19 December 1846 in Goes and christened in the "separated christian congregation" in Goes on 17 January 1847. She was named after her father Adriaan Boddingius. On 14 October 1862, about 18 months after her father's death, Adriana Boddingius, and her mother Johanna Cornelia Snoep, moved to Rotterdam (ZH) where they lived until they returned to Goes in July 1863.
On 9 May 1872, she moved together with her mother Johanna Cornelia Snoep, from Goes to the house B68 in the Wijnstraat, in Dordrecht (ZH). Six months later, she married on 5 December 1872, in Dordrecht (ZH), at age 25: Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm BARTELT, child of Carl Friedrich BARTELT (deceased before 1910) and Maria Louisa SVELIEG (?) (deceased before 1910). He was born 3 April 1833 in Wilsdorf, Prussia. They had the following children:
After their marriage, Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bartelt moved in with his wife Adriana Boddingius, who was living together with her mother Johanna Cornelia Snoep, in the house B68 in the Wijnstraat, in Dordrecht (ZH). He was a sailor on ships sailing the oceans (zeeman grote vaart) and probably was not home much. For example, he was not home for the birth of any of his five children. On 13 April 1874, a month before the birth of their first child, Adriana Boddingius' mother, Johanna Cornelia Snoep, moved to Wemeldinge (Z), to live with her son Thomas Boddingius and his family. Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bartelt and his wife Adriana Boddingius continued to live in the house B68 in the Wijnstraat until at least 15 June 1875 and later moved to the house B69 (next door?). They moved to the house E404 at the Bleekerssloot, sometime before 17 May 1877, which was the date that Adriana Boddingius' sister Kornelia Adriana Boddingius moved in with them, shortly later, after her marriage, followed by her husband, Johannes Baptist Wouters. Johannes Baptist Wouters, who just as Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bartelt was a sailor sailing the oceans, died on 26 December 1877 as the result of a drowning. On 5 September 1878, the Bartelt family once again lived in the house B68 in the Wijnstraat. On 12 May 1879 and 1 July 1879, they lived in the house A284 at the Groenmarkt. On 27 May 1880, Kornelia Adriana Boddingius, who was a widow at that time, moved out and moved to Leiden (ZH). On 28 June 1880, Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bartelt and his wife Adriana Boddingius lived in the house B961 in the Spuiweg. After that, they briefly lived in the house A348 and on 25 November 1881 they lived in the house A357 at the Knolhaven.
On 10 January 1883, Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bartelt and his wife Adriana Boddingius moved to Antwerp, Belgium, together with their only surviving child, Cornelia Adriana Bartelt. At the time of their move, they were once again living in the house E404, at the Bleekerssloot. On 31 October 1889, they moved from Antwerp, Belgium to the Eendrachtsstraat 114, in Rotterdam (ZH), only to move back to Antwerp, Belgium on 21 February 1891. On 21 September 1896 they once again moved from Antwerp, Belgium to Rotterdam (ZH). Initially they moved to the Eendrachtsstraat 52 and then to the Hillelaan 30, Hillelaan 24, Breede Hilledijk 87 and Hillelaan 16, which was later renumbered to 18b. On 12 April 1910, Adriana Boddingius' older sister, Kornelia Adriana Boddingius, moved in with them at the Hillelaan 18b.
On 28 November 1910 at 1 AM, in the house at the Hillelaan 18b, Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bartelt died at age 77. His death was registered the next day in Rotterdam (ZH). At the time of his death, he was no longer working. Not too long after that, the two sisters, Adriana Boddingius and Kornelia Adriana Boddingius, moved to the Pretorialaan 60b, where Kornelia Adriana Boddingius died on 30 August 1911. Either shortly before, or after, the death of Kornelia Adriana Boddingius, Adriana Boddingius' other sister, Johanna Cornelia Boddingius, moved in with her at the Pretorialaan 60b. She however did not stay there for too long, because on 27 June 1912 she moved to Amsterdam (NH).
Adriana Boddingius later moved to the Rosestraat 6 and then to the Burgemeester Hoffmanstraat 30b, where she was joined by her daughter Johanna Cornelia Bartelt and her daughter's husband, Gerardus Johannes de Jong, and their two children. The whole family later moved to the Soetendaalscheweg 89b and then Soetendaalscheweg 85a. At some point in time, her daughter and her daughter's family, which by that time may have consisted of five children, moved out again, to live on their own. Adriana Boddingius moved to the Gouvernestraat 144b, where she died on 12 February 1920 at 5 PM at age 73. Her death was registered 14 February 1920 in Rotterdam (ZH). At the time of her death, she was without an occupation. |

She died 31 October 1885 in Moordrecht (ZH) at age 55. She married (1) on 20 October 1853 in Driewegen (Z), with marriage banns published in Goes and presumably also in Driewegen (Z), on 9 October 1853 and 16 October 1853: Hendrik Gerrit LE COINTRE, child of Jan Antoni LE COINTRE (pharmacist, living in Goes) and Jacoba Pieternella VALK (rentier (particuliere), living in Goes). He was born 4 March 1829 in Goes and died 28 October 1855 in Driewegen (Z) at age 26. At the time of their marriage he was 24 years old and a medical doctor living in Driewegen (Z), while she was 23 year old, with no occupation living in Goes. They had the following children:
Pieternella BODDINGIUS, after the death of her husband Hendrik Gerrit Le Cointre, married (2) on 7 July 1857 in Driewegen (Z): Benjamin Jan Hendrik BOERS, child of Benjamin BOERS (born 1803 in Utrecht (U), died 1878 in Brielle (Z), Reverend) and Catharina Johanna Jacoba Schoemaker (born 1808 in Amsterdam (NH)). He was born in 1830 in Renswoude (U) and died before 31 October 1885. At the time of their marriage he was 27 years old, a doctor and obstetrician, while she was also 27 years old and not working for a living (particuliere). They had the following children:

She was born 31 March 1832 in Goes and died 31 May 1861 in Goes after a lengthy illness, at age 29. She married 16 July 1857 in Goes, with intent to marry registered in Goes on 24 June 1857 and marriage banns published in Goes on 28 June 1857 and 5 July 1857: Jacobus Gilles DOBBELAERE, child of Gerardus DOBBELAERE and Johanna Margaretha ROTTEVEEL (both deceased at the time of marriage of their son). He was born 19 December 1834 in Vlissingen (Z) and died 18 April 1894 in Middelburg (Z) at age 59. At the time of their marriage he was 22 years old and a teacher living in Vlissingen (Z), while she was 25 years old, without an occupation, living in Goes. They had the following children:
It is not exactly known when and why Jacoba Pieternella Boddingius moved to Driewegen (Z) and how Jacobus Gilles Dobbelaere ended up there, but it is likely that Jacoba Pieternella Boddingius moved there near the end of 1855 to help her sister Pieternella Boddingius, who was seven months pregnant and had just become a widow after the death of her husband Hendrik Gerrit Le Cointre in October 1855. Jacoba Pieternella Boddingius and Jacobus Gilles Dobbelaere married in Goes but apparently continued to live in Driewegen (Z), given the fact that their first child was born there in February 1858. They apparently moved back to Goes just before or after the death of Jacoba Pieternella Boddingius' father, Hubertus Boddingius, on 4 August 1858. Hubertus Boddingius had been a store keeper in Goes and they apparently took over the store after his death. This would explain why Jacobus Gilles Dobbelaere, who in 1857 was a teacher, in 1862, at the time of his second marriage, listed store keeper as his occupation. He probably was operating the store previously owned by Hubertus Boddingius and now owned by him after the death of his wife Jacoba Pieternella Boddingius on 31 May 1861. He later was a merchant of glassware and farmer's hats. His merchant skills either were not so good or he hit on bad times, because on 9 August 1886 he declared bankruptcy. His financial settlement offered to his creditors was approved by the court in Middelburg (Z) on 29 September 1886. He was a member of the local militia (schutterij) in Goes and was given a medal of honor for his long and loyal service. For more information about the Dobbelaere family visit the Dobbelaere website.
Jacobus Gilles DOBBELAERE, after the death of his wife Jacoba Pieternella Boddingius, married (2) on 15 January 1862 in Goes, with intent to marry registered in Goes on 3 January 1862 and marriage banns published in Goes on 5 January 1862 and 12 January 1862: Maria Elisabeth MASSEE, child of Johannes Cornelis MASSEE (deceased at the time of marriage of his daughter) and Elisabeth Catharina ROVERS (store clerk in Goes at the time of marriage of her daughter). She was born 29 April 1828 in Middelburg (Z). At the time of her marriage she was 33 years old, without occupation living in Goes. They had the following children:

STERK Family
|
|
Near the end of the 18th century, Frederik Willem Sterk, a young man from Wezel, settled in Goes and married a local girl, Johanna van den Ende. In the early part of the 19th century, one of their sons, Gijsbregt Sterk, married Cornelia Adriana Boddingius. This was the first union of the Boddingius and Sterk families. They had many descendants.
Near the end of the 19th century, two daughters of Pieter Sterk and Johanna van den Berge, namely Pieternella Sterk and Wilhelmina Sterk, married two of the sons of Thomas Boddingius and Maria Johanna Olivierse with descendants in the 20th and 21st century, namely Adriaan Boddingius and Johannes Cornelis Boddingius, respectively. Coincidently, these were the two sons whose family names were recorded as Boddingius with "dd", while the family names of the other two surviving sons were recorded as Bodingius with a single "d". Therefore, all descendents with the family name Boddingius with "dd", not only share the same Boddingius ancestors, but also the same Sterk ancestors.

Frederik Willem STERK, born in 1755 in Wezel (Wesel, Germany?). He died 13 February 1818 in Goes, at 2 AM in the house in ward C with number 2, at age 63. His death was registered the same day by his son Gijsbregt Sterk and Kornelis van der Volkeren (55) concierge and a neighbour of the family. He married 5 March 1794 in Goes, with marriage banns first published in Goes on 15 February 1794: Johanna van den ENDE, child of Gijsbregt van den ENDE (christened 9 November 1723 in Goes, married 26 June 1754 in Goes, died December 1805 in Goes) and Cornelia Leenderts CRAMER (christened 21 December 1727 in Goes, died before January 1818). She was born 1 August 1870 and christened 8 August 1770, both in Goes. Her christening was witnessed by (her maternal grandmother) Adriana Nederhof. She died 16 August 1833 at 5 PM in Goes in the house in ward C with number 32, at age 63. Her death was registered the same day by Nicolaas Katsman (46) and Johannes Magielse (54), both undertakers living in Goes and acquaintances of the family. At the time of their marriage he was 39 years old and living in Goes, while she was 23 years old and living in Goes.
In October 1797 they were living in the house in ward C with number 2, in the Lange Kerkstraat, where they were still living at the time of death of Frederik Willem Sterk in 1818. Both in 1797 and in 1818 he was referenced as a postmaster, however at the time of death of his youngest child, Elisabeth Maria Sterk, in 1812, he was listed as a storekeeper. After the death of her husband in 1818, Johanna van den Ende apparently continued to operate the store, because in 1819 at the time of marriage of her son Gijsbregt Sterk, she was listed as a storekeeper. It's likely she was later joined in the operation of the store by her son Gijsbregt Sterk, who in later years was also listed as a storekeeper. At the time of her death in 1833, she was living in the same house as her son Gijsbregt Sterk had been living in since at least 1823, namely the house in ward C with number 32. From 1828 until her death in 1833, she apparently was no longer working for a living because, because in those years she was referenced as a "particuliere". They had the following children:

Although reduced in size, the "old reformed congregation" of Goes continued to exist and on 29 January 1845, Gijsbrecht Sterk bought a storage structure (pakhuisje), located in the Stoofstraat in Goes, number D144, for Fl. 700, which later that year was renovated and converted into a space where services could be held. Although Budding maintained contact with members of the "old reformed congregation" of Goes, he wasn't performing any services there and for many years the congregation was without a preacher or spiritual leader. In 1848 Budding even emigrated to the United States, totally abandoning the congregations he founded, although he continued to maintain contact with some of its members, such as Johannes de Jonge and his wife Janna Visser.
He apparently didn't like it too much in the United States and in the summer of 1851, Budding returned to the Netherlands and in the fall of that year he once again was performing services at the "old reformed congregation" in Goes.
In order to provide the opportunity to start with a clean slate, both for Budding himself, as well as the members of the congregation, it was agreed that in order to become a member of the (new) congregation, one had to participate in a "commitment" ceremony. The first such ceremony was held on 24 February 1852 and the five persons participating in this ceremony together with Budding were, Gijsbrecht Sterk (54), elder in the former congregation, Johannes de Jonge, deacon in the former congregation, Karel Mulder, a member of the former congregation since 1842 and two persons who formerly were members of the "separated christian congregation" in Goes, namely Adriana Smit and Adriaan Boddingius (50), younger brother of Gijsbrecht Sterk's wife Cornelia Adriana Boddingius, and therefore his brother in law.
On 12 October 1844, Adriaan Boddingius (42) and his wife Johanna Cornelia Snoep (36), had separated from the DRC/NHK and became members of the "separated christian congregation" of Goes, in which Adriaan was a deacon from 24 May 1847 until 29 May 1851. On 3 February 1852 they left this congregation and as described earlier, on 24 February 1852, Adriaan (50) became a member of the "old reformed congregation" of Goes, while his wife Johanna Cornelia Snoep (43) joined the congregation a few months later, sometime in April/May 1852.

On 9 April 1852, a new church council was chosen, which consisted of Gijsbrecht Sterk, elder, Johannes de Jonge, deacon, Gerard Otte, elder and Adriaan Boddingius, deacon.
With Budding's return, the new congregation blossomed and expanded rapidly. The little church in the Stoofstraat soon was too small and on 28 May 1852 Gijsbrecht Sterk once again came to the rescue of the congregation and purchased a barn in Goes at the Zevenkoten, number D201, also for Fl. 700. The official purchase was recorded on 8 June 1852 and renovations were completed by 19 September 1852, at which time the first "last supper" was held in the new church.
Just days before, on 17 September 1852, Marcus Boddingius (76) joined the "old reformed congregation" of Goes, in which both his son Adriaan Boddingius and his son in law Gijsbrecht Sterk, played such prominent roles and on 2 October 1852 he officially left the DRC/NHK to which he had belonged all his prior life. He continued to be a member of the "old reformed congregation" until his death in 1859 (83). On 24 September 1852, Pieternella Marculina Sterk (29), daughter of Gijsbrecht Sterk and Cornelia Adriana Boddingius, also joined the "old reformed congregation".
As reason for terminating their membership with the DRC/NHK often was given, the fact that the church was not following God's word properly. On 2 April 1853, the board of the DRC/NHK reported that no one was willing to rescind these "unproven and defaming" accusations mentioned in their termination letters, however, rather than terminating their membership, the DRC/NHK maintained them as censured members, which was also the case for Marcus Boddingius and Pieternella Marculina Sterk.
Two other children of Gijsbrecht Sterk and Cornelia Adriana Boddingius, Adriana Sterk (25) and Adriaan Sterk (26), joined the congregation on 25 March 1853 and 24 April 1859 respectively.
In 1858, Gijsbrecht Sterk became terminally ill and no longer could perform his duties as an elder of the congregation. During a church meeting on 20 August 1858, new elders were chosen and his son Marcus Sterk (29) was elected as a deacon, while Gijsbrecht's brother in law Adriaan Boddingius (56) continued to serve as a deacon. The new church board was confirmed on 5 September 1858, two weeks before the death of their pillar and benefactor, Gijsbrecht Sterk on 17 September 1858 (61).
In his testament of 5 December 1857, Gijsbrecht Sterk willed the two properties he had purchased and were used as churches by the congregation, to Budding personally. Because the congregation was still not officially registered and therefore was not a recognized entity by the law, these properties could not be willed to the congregation and therefore were willed to Budding personally. However on 10 December 1858, a few months after Gijsbrecht Sterk's death, Budding made a declaration forgoing the entitlement to these two properties and returned them to the "Sterk Successors", which were Gijsbrecht Sterk's eight surviving children.
The congregation continued to expand and on 7 January 1859, the property next to the existing church on the Zevenkoten, the one with number D202, was purchased by Marinus Krijgsman. The existing storage structure was demolished and the "Sterk Successors" financed most of the expansion.
On 22 June 1859, the inheritance of Gijsbrecht Sterk was divided and his daughter Johanna Pieternella Sterk and her husband Hendrik Jan van den Berge, obtained the rights to these two properties. Both were members of the DRC/NHK in Axel (Z), where they were living. This created a somewhat awkward situation for all parties involved and on 13 October 1859, they donated these two properties once again to Budding.
Although Adriaan Boddingius was a deacon with the "old reformed congregation" in Goes, his children weren't participating too much in this congregation and on 7 October 1859, one of his daughters, with the consent of her mother, had gone for confirmation (belijdenis) with one of the more liberal preachers of the DRC/NHK in Goes. This didn't sit well with Budding and two days later, on 9 October 1859, he went to the house of Adriaan Boddingius to remind him and his wife Johanna Cornelia Snoep of their duties towards their children. This visit infuriated Johanna Cornelia Snoep so much, that she immediately terminated her membership with the "old reformed congregation" of Budding.
Adriaan Boddingius, who was a silver smith, also had been criticized by some members of the congregation, because he yearly had a booth at the fair of Heinkenszand (Z), an event which was shunned by the members of the "old reformed congregation".
One and another apparently also became too much for Adriaan Boddingius and on 14 January 1860, he too terminated his membership and position as deacon with the "old reformed congregation" and days later, on 17 January 1860, he returned to the "separated christian congregation", where he remained a member until his death (59) a year later His wife Johanna Cornelia Snoep, who had left Budding's congregation a few months earlier, officially rejoined the "separated christian congregation" in Goes a few weeks after her husband, on 3 February 1860.
In the fall of 1860, after visiting George Müller, a prominent preacher and philanthropist in Bristol, England, Budding's theological views changed radically and his congregation hesitantly followed him in this new direction. However for some, including Marcus Sterk and his wife Adriana van Meegdenburg, the preaching had become too liberal and they withdrew themselves from the congregation's activities and meetings. In July 1861, Marcus Sterk (32) laid down his function as a deacon and during a meeting of the congregation's membership on 20 September 1861, their membership, together with that of 14 others, was terminated.
A year later, on 5 September 1962, Marcus Sterk's brother and sister, Adriaan Sterk (30) and Pieternella Marculina Sterk (39), also left the congregation.
On 14 October 1862, about 18 months after her husband's death, Johanna Cornelia Snoep (54) requested an attest from the "separated christian congregation" in Goes on behalf of herself and her daughter Adriana (15), because they were moving to Rotterdam (ZH). When Adriana Boddingius returned from Rotterdam (ZH) to Goes in July 1863, she returned her attest, which she had not handed in to a church in Rotterdam (ZH) because she only attended church once during the nine months she was there. The congregation's board however did not accept her back and terminated her as a member.
In 1867, Marcus Sterk (38) and his wife Adriana van Meegdenburg (39) joined the "gereformeerde gemeente onder het kruis", translated meaning "reformed congregation under the cross", in Goes led by reverend Keulemans. Shortly after, Marcus Sterk became an elder with this congregation. A few years later, in 1870, the "reformed congregation under the cross" in Goes united with the "separated christian congregation" in Goes and became the "verenigde christelijke gereformeerde gemeente", or translated "united christian reformed congregation". |
